The 7th Annual Conference of the 
Metagenomics and Metadesign of Subways and Urban Biomes (MetaSUB) International Consortium

November 18-21, 2022 in Miami Beach, FL
at the beautiful Fontainebleau hotel.

Speakers at the meeting included leaders in metagenomics research and global health policy from around the world, including from academia, industry, government, and non-profit organizations

The last day of the meeting (Nov. 21) focused on research on environmental metagenomics profiling and disease prevalence prediction using wastewater survellience, with presentations on ongoing research projects funded by the U.S.A. National Institutes of Health (NIH) Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics - Radical (RADx-rad) program.

Keynote talks featured leaders from academia, industry, government, and non-profits who are established leaders in the fields of metagenomics and global health.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Scott Gottlieb, MD

23rd commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

Topics will include:

Global update on DNA and RNA virus mapping from MetaSUB and other groups (e.g. JGI, CDC)

Wastewater collection and processing methods and best practices

Bioinformatics tools for patient and environmental sampling

Microbial quantification, benchmarking, and variant tracking

Ethical, legal and social issues

Satellite Sessions

The MetaSUB conference had 3 satellite sessions on the University of Miami campus:

1. Field demonstration of wastewater sample collection and processing

2. Tour of biorepository and genomics shared resources that process and store wastewater samples and generate metagenomics data

3. Workshop on metagenomic analysis

The conference is being organized by a team from the University of Miami, Weill Cornell Medicine and the MetaSUB International Consortium. Organizing leads are Dr. Christopher Mason, George Grills, Dr. Helena Solo-Gabriele, Krista Ryon and Maria Robertson.
